Golden Thread Productions Education Program

Teacher Training Workshop

October 1 - 2, 2011

A Weekend for Professional Educators devoted to the study of Middle Eastern Arts and Literature

The Middle East has dominated the news for more than two decades, yet most Americans’ knowledge of the area and its people is superficial at best. Many urban areas in this country have seen a large growth in the immigrant populations from the region, which translates into more students grounded in that culture enrolling in public and private schools whose faculty and staff have little background on which to draw when trying to meet their needs.

Golden Thread Productions hosts this weekend of professional development for teachers as a means of bringing together experts in the various aspects of Middle Eastern arts and culture, and teachers who seek to broaden their own understanding of the area. These sessions are intended to provide educators with a better understanding of the foundations of Middle Eastern culture so that they in turn can enrich their own teaching in the fields of literature, world history, language and the arts.

Golden Thread offers after-school and in-school residencies in theater education which teach basic theater techniques while introducing students from K-12 to the culture and current events of the Middle East. Our instructors are multi-lingual and are trained theater performers as well as teachers. The organization’s touring company, The Fairytale Players, offers on-site performances of plays based on Middle Eastern tales and literature; middle- and high-school students are invited to special student matinees of major new professionally-performed works, for which study guides are available.
